Athletic Bilbao one narrow step ahead in Valencia preview

Why Valencia still have enough to make this awkward

Valencia are not in a position to treat this as a free hit. They are 12th on 39 points and three points above the relegation zone, so the margin for another poor away display is thin. Sports Mole put that part plainly: "Valencia are not yet safe from the drop in Spain's top flight."

There is also a little more threat in their recent scoring touch than the table might suggest. Umar Sadiq has scored twice in his last three La Liga appearances, which at least gives Valencia a forward who can make a low-margin game uncomfortable.

Even so, the wider away picture is hard to ignore. Valencia's 13 points from 17 league trips is not the sort of return that travels well to San Mames, and their recent run of LWDLL does not suggest a side arriving with much control. If Athletic are sharp, this should still tilt their way.

The most likely outcome is a tight home win, not a runaway. Athletic need the points, and the home record gives them the better platform to get them.
