Clarke’s sharper line was even more direct. "We gave them the goals, we gave them the game they wanted. Disappointing," he said, and it is hard to argue with the basic read of the night. Scotland were hurt by their own mistakes, starting with Scott McKenna's error in the 7th minute, which gifted Vinícius Júnior the opener.

The Scotland manager also refused to be drawn on what comes next. "I don't even want to think about that! Sorry, I don't need to think about that," he said, which fits the mood better than any polished post-match line would have done.

Brazil's quality and the VAR flashpoint
