Angus Gunn under scrutiny after Switzerland defeat

"For me I think it's so poor from Angus Gunn," Andy Halliday said after Scotland's Scotland vs Switzerland defeat at Hampden. Switzerland won 0-3, and the discussion afterwards moved quickly from the result to Angus Gunn's part in it.

Halliday's criticism and McFadden's view

Halliday was not alone in pointing the finger at the goalkeeper. James McFadden said, "I know it's a powerful strike, but that's one that Angus Gunn can keep out."

The third goal was the one that stoked the argument most. Zeki Amdouni fired through Gunn's arms and into the net, while Halliday also said, "I've never been a big defender of goalkeepers and I'm looking for more from Angus Gunn."

Gunn did not hide from the performance either. He said, "I'll look back and see what I could have done better and get better for the next game."

The case for keeping him in place

The criticism is real, but it is not the whole story. Gunn made 6 saves in the match and finished with a 7 rating, so this was not a complete collapse from start to finish.

He has also been Scotland's established choice in the competition. Gunn started all 3 World Cup games in front of Liam Kelly and Craig Gordon, and his rating across those 3 appearances was 7.53.

That does not erase the mistakes on the night, especially the one that led to Amdouni's goal, but it does explain why the goalkeeper debate is wider than one poor moment. Halliday even added that he did not think there was someone "battering the door down" for the shirt because several keepers are not playing regularly.

Scotland now move on to North Macedonia on Saturday and Slovenia on Tuesday next, with Gunn's place still under discussion after the loss to Switzerland.
