Nagelsmann said he informed Baumann in March that Germany had spoken with Neuer. He also said the squad announcement was brought forward by nine days, and that Neuer only signed his Bayern extension until 2027 last Friday, which gave Germany the clarity they wanted before the recall was made at very short notice.

Why Nagelsmann wanted more than save percentage

He went further on Neuer’s place in the hierarchy, saying Germany needed clarity on what his future holds and that the Bayern extension was a prerequisite.

He has a huge number of titles, an aura, and a massive reputation,” he said. That is not a throwaway line. It is the coach telling you that this call was about leadership and internal balance as much as reflexes.

The numbers from Germany’s qualifying campaign fit that picture. They conceded just three goals, so the goalkeeping conversation is already happening in a team that has not been leaking chances. Neuer has also played at four World Cups since 2010, which helps explain why Nagelsmann is comfortable leaning on tournament experience.

The fitness caveat is still real

There is a reason this was never a blind endorsement. Nagelsmann said, “Manu helps the team when he plays. But there have been periods recently when he hasn't played, and that could happen to us too. We can't be blind to that; we have to factor it in.” Neuer came off in Bayern’s 5-1 win over 1. FC Köln with left calf trouble, and the source brief says he remains doubtful and under assessment.

That makes the decision slightly more cautious than the headline suggests.
